A healthy family is a happy family – and that’s makes for a healthy, happy workplace wellness program, too. If you want your workplace wellness program to be as effective as possible, make sure you’re helping everyone in your employees’ families to embrace health and wellness.
When everyone in a family is living a healthy lifestyle, it makes it easier to make the positive habits permanent.
As you plan your health and wellness efforts, consider ways that you can include employees’ families. Here are a few simple, affordable ways to get spouses and children involved:
- Plan some of your wellness activities when family can attend. Think about evenings and weekends. Be sure the activity appeals to people of all ages. You might consider a picnic at a local park that has a playground for the little ones and a volleyball court for the grown-ups. Keep the event low-cost by having everyone bring a healthful dish to pass.
- Hold health challenges in which families compete against one another. Which family ate the most nutritious meals together this month? Which family took the most number of walks together in 30 days? Perhaps the employee of the family who wins might get an extra day off to spend with family.
- Spotlight a healthy family in your wellness newsletter. Maybe the Smith family spent its vacation biking across the state, the Miller family trained together for a marathon, or the Wheelers have a weekly ritual of cooking a healthy meal together. Reading how other families brought together health and fun may inspire other employees and their families to do the same.
