Words can have a powerful impact on people’s attitudes and behaviors, particularly when it comes to health and wellness. You don’t need to be eloquent or witty and come up with your own quotes. Borrow existing ones from others, as long as you properly attribute them.
You can use inspirational quotes in any, and just about all, wellness communications, newsletters, posters, emails, and social media. Quotes are a great way to grab people’s attention, get them thinking about messages, and pull participants into your content. Even if people don’t remember the quotes word for word, many individuals tend to remember the general ideas long after they have read the quotes. What’s more, because others (not company leaders) are the ones who originally spoke the words, what they said can validate what you are trying to communicate. Hey, if Albert Einstein said it, it must be true, right?
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Sources to use: Do an online search using any number of terms — “inspirational health quotes,” “humorous health quotes,” “quotes about exercise,” “quotes about nutrition,” etc. A number of sites will come up in your search results — including allgreatquotes.com, quotegarden.com, and brainyquotes.com just to name a few.
- Look through the quotes to find ones that fit your topic or overall wellness philosophy. Many of the sites will organize quotes into categories to make it easier and faster than weeding through everything ever said.
- Be sure the quotes use everyday language and references that everyone would understand.
- Shorter quotes are better than longer ones. They are more likely to be read and remembered. Think a line or two that someone could easily read in a quick scan.
- Once you have identified quotes you’d like to use, check to make sure that the quotes are accurate and attributed to the right people by searching to see if the quotes and attribution are consistent with what other sites include.
- Do background searches on the authors of the quotes. Are they people who you’d be comfortable with as a “spokesperson” for your wellness program? You should probably stay away from politicians, those with radical political/social thoughts one way or the other, religious leaders (unless your organization is affiliated with a particular religious belief), anyone ever accused/convicted of a crime, etc.
